Fellowship Opportunities

Learn more about funding opportunities offered by and through the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

Nearly a full third of PhD students studying biomedical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis received research support through an external fellowship.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering strongly encourages prospective doctoral program applicants to apply the following fellowships. In addition to the application to WashU BME, the application packages should be submitted separately in the fellowship admission websites.

University Fellowships

McDonnell International Scholars Academy. This fellowship is open to students from 30 McDonnell Partnership Institutions domestic and abroad.
Chancellor’s Fellowship. The Ann W. and Spencer T. Olin – Chancellor’s Fellowship (OCF) is an elite cohort of outstanding graduate students with diverse backgrounds and from varied disciplines.

National Competitive Fellowships

American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship. These two-year awards provide stipend and money towards health insurance and project support.
Department of Defense Predoctoral Traineeships. A three-year award providing students with stipend, tuition and travel funds to scientific meetings.
Ford Foundation Fellowship. A three-year award that provides a stipend, networking and travel funds to scientific meetings.
National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program. This three-year award program offers a stipend and a small health allowance.
National Institutes of Health Individual Predoctoral Kirschstein Fellowship. The NIH has a number of research fellowships that potential students can apply for.
- National Research Service Awards for Minority Students (F31): A five-year award that provides a stipend and institutional allowance.
- National Research Service Awards Fellowships (F31): A five-year award that provides a stipend and institutional allowance.
- NHLBI Ruth L. Kirsch stein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral MD/PhD Fellows (F30): A six-year award that provides a stipend and institutional allowance.
- Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards for Individual Predoctoral MD/PhD Fellows (F30): A six-year award that provides a stipend and institutional allowance.
National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. A three-year award that provides a stipend and a cost of education allowance.
The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans. The fellowships are grants cover up to two years of graduate study in the United States.
